Music at Ickworth Park Primary School

At Ickworth Park Primary School, our Music curriculum is designed to be ambitious, engaging and accessible for all pupils, building progressively on knowledge and skills from the Early Years to Year 6.

Our Intent

At Ickworth Park Primary School, our music curriculum is designed to develop confident, creative and expressive learners who appreciate and enjoy music in a wide range of forms.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop a love of music and performance
  • Build confidence in listening, composing and performing
  • Understand basic musical concepts and notation
  • Experience high-quality music opportunities

We believe that music is a vital part of a child’s education and plays an important role in developing confidence, resilience and self-expression.

Our Approach

In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, we use Charanga to support a structured and engaging introduction to music.

Pupils develop:

  • Rhythm and pulse
  • Singing skills
  • Listening and appraising music
  • Early composition skills

From Key Stage 2 onwards, our curriculum becomes increasingly practical and performance-based.

  • Pupils are taught by specialist peripatetic music teachers from Suffolk County Council
  • Each class learns a musical instrument for a full academic year
  • Instruments change as pupils move through KS2, allowing them to develop a broad range of musical experiences

This ensures pupils receive high-quality, specialist teaching and develop real musical skills.

Progression

Music learning begins in the Early Years, where children explore sound, rhythm and singing through play and structured activities. Pupils build musical knowledge and skill progressively, moving from exploration and singing in EYFS and KS1 to instrumental performance and notation in KS2.

  • In EYFS and KS1, pupils develop foundational skills in rhythm, listening and performance
  • In KS2, pupils build on this by learning to play instruments and develop greater musical understanding

As pupils progress:

  • They develop confidence in performing
  • They begin to understand and read basic musical notation
  • By the end of Year 6, many pupils are able to read and interpret simple music

Learning is carefully sequenced to build confidence, skill and independence over time.

Inclusion

All pupils are supported to access the music curriculum.

  • Whole-class instrument teaching ensures every child can take part
  • Support is adapted where needed to ensure all pupils can participate
  • Opportunities are provided for all pupils to perform and succeed

We are committed to ensuring music is accessible to all pupils, regardless of background or experience.

What Makes Music Special at Ickworth Park

Music is a vibrant and celebrated part of life at Ickworth Park.

  • Pupils perform annually in a summer concert for families, held on the school field
  • Pupils take part in the WCIT Music Festival
  • Our pupils have performed at prestigious venues including:
    • The O2 Arena (Young Voices)
    • Snape Maltings
    • The Apex Theatre

These performances provide pupils with unforgettable experiences and help build confidence, teamwork and pride.

We are proud that many pupils go on to:

  • Learn instruments independently
  • Continue their musical journey beyond school

We also ensure pupils are given opportunities to showcase their talents within school.
