The Curriculum

The Curriculum at Ickworth Park Primary School

At Ickworth Park Primary School, our curriculum is designed to ensure that every child develops the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed both in school and beyond.

Our core values of respect, challenge, resilience and confidence underpin all aspects of learning and school life.

Our Curriculum Vision

We aim to provide a curriculum that is:

  • Ambitious for all pupils
  • Carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6
  • Inclusive and accessible for every learner
  • Broad, balanced and engaging

We want our pupils to develop a love of learning, confidence in their abilities, and the resilience to face new challenges.

Our Approach to Learning

Our curriculum is built to ensure clear progression in knowledge and skills across all subjects.

  • Learning in Early Years builds strong foundations, particularly in language, communication and early reading
  • This knowledge is carefully developed as pupils move through KS1 and KS2
  • Subject leaders ensure that learning is coherent, well-sequenced and builds over time

We place a strong emphasis on:

  • Vocabulary development
  • Secure understanding of key concepts
  • Applying knowledge across subjects

Core Learning

Reading and Phonics

We prioritise early reading to ensure all children become confident, fluent readers.

  • A structured phonics approach is used from EYFS
  • Pupils are supported to develop fluency, comprehension and a love of reading
Writing

Writing is a key priority across the school.

  • Pupils are given regular opportunities to write at length
  • Writing is developed across the curriculum, not just in English
  • We provide challenge to support pupils in working at greater depth
Handwriting and Early Writing

We place a strong emphasis on developing the foundations for writing from the very start of school.

  • In Early Years, children develop fine motor control, pencil grip and early mark-making skills
  • This supports correct letter formation and confidence in writing
  • These skills are built upon as pupils move through the school, leading to fluent, legible handwriting
Mathematics

Our maths curriculum builds secure understanding and confidence through:

  • A structured and progressive approach
  • Opportunities to apply reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Development of fluency alongside deeper understanding

The Wider Curriculum

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum across all subjects.

  • Foundation subjects are carefully planned to ensure progression
  • Pupils develop subject-specific knowledge and vocabulary
  • Learning is enriched through wider opportunities and experiences

Inclusion

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils can access and succeed in our curriculum.

  • Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners
  • Pupils with SEND are supported to access the full curriculum
  • Staff use assessment and monitoring to provide targeted support

Monitoring and Improvement

Our curriculum is continually reviewed and developed.

  • Subject leaders monitor teaching, learning and outcomes
  • Particular focus is given to key groups (including SEND and disadvantaged pupils)
  • We use assessment and pupil voice to ensure our curriculum meets the needs of all learners
