Modern Foreign Languages
What does the learning of Modern Foreign Languages look like at Ickworth Park?
At Ickworth Park we follow the scheme ‘Language Angels’. Our focus language is French. Language Angels aims to equip all pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum that deepens knowledge but also provides the cultural experiences they need to flourish throughout the primary phase and beyond. The language curriculum is carefully planned using progressive units provided by Language Angels and is regularly monitored to ensure it is building upon prior knowledge, offering sufficient challenge and supporting every child to thrive with the curriculum content.
Children begin following the Language Angels scheme in Year 3 however prior exposure is fundamental to ensure children are enthusiastic and confident when beginning discretely taught lessons in Key Stage 2. In reception and Key Stage 1, children are encouraged to answer the register, describe how they are feeling and respond to spoken commands in our target language.
During the language learning process, we will help every child to develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning. These are:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
Each lesson delivered is underpinned by the Three Pillars of language learning. These are:
- Phonics
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
