PSHE/RSE
PSHE and RSE (Relationships and sex eduction) at Ickworth Park Primary School
At Ickworth Park Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to be ambitious, engaging and accessible for all pupils, building progressively on knowledge and skills from the Early Years to Year 6. We believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an essential part of every pupil’s learning and development. Through a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum (including relationships and sex education) we aim to support children in becoming healthy, independent, respectful and responsible members of society.
Our PSHE programme enables pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives now and in the future. It helps children to stay safe and healthy, build positive relationships, develop resilience and self-esteem, and understand their rights and responsibilities within the school community and wider world.
PSHE education at our school reflects the values and ethos of the school and supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We provide a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where children feel confident to discuss sensitive issues, express their views and ask questions.
Our Intent
At Ickworth Park Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to:
- Develop pupils’ ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives now and in the future.
- Help children stay safe and healthy, build positive relationships, develop resilience and self-esteem, and understand their rights and responsibilities within the school community and wider world.
We aim for all pupils to:
- Be equipped to manage emotions and challenges effectively
- Understand what good mental health is and how to foster it
- Be equipped to make informed choices about their physical health, safety and lifestyle
- Develop positive relationships and social skills
- Be prepared for life in modern society – understanding their rights, responsibilities and respect for diversity within the school and wider community
Our Approach
We use the Kapow scheme as a foundation for our curriculum.
Teachers adapt this to reflect:
- The needs of our pupils
- Our local context
- Opportunities at Ickworth Park
Learning focuses on these key areas:
- My healthy self
- Connecting with others
- The online world
- Staying safe
- Health protection
- Growing up
- Citizenship
- Sex education
- First aid
Progression
Learning in PSHE begins in the Early Years, where children learn to make friends and play cooperatively; share and take turns and listen and follow instructions. As pupils move through the school in Key Stage 1, pupils begin to learn about how to look after their feelings and bodies; stay safe in different places (including online) and understand what belonging to a community means.
In Key Stage 2, pupils learn about making healthy life choices; what a healthy relationship looks like; how to manage money and how their bodies and emotions will change as they grow.
By Year 6, pupils are able to recognise and manage their emotions appropriately; demonstrate confidence, resilience and independence; make safe, informed and responsible choices in everyday situations and understand the importance of honesty, fairness and responsibility. We aim for children to leave Ickworth Park at the end of year 6 well prepared for the transition to secondary school and the wider world.
Inclusion
All pupils are supported to access the PSHE curriculum.
This includes:
- Scaffolding and adapted resources
- Clear modelling and vocabulary
- Practical and engaging experiences (including drama and role play, inviting visitors in and taking part in workshops).
We ensure all pupils can participate fully alongside their peers.
Enrichment and real experiences
At Ickworth Park, we enhance our PSHE curriculum through:
- Offering opportunities for visitors to share their skills and knowledge with the children. These include visits from people such as police officers, the fire service and dentists.
- Taking part in workshops in person or online on mindfulness, keeping safe with the NSPCC, Anti bullying week live lessons and assemblies. In addition to this, our year 6s take part in a life skills safety programme called Crucial Crew.
- Leading regular assemblies on areas such as: mental health and wellbeing, online safety and bullying
- Having a team of children who are trained as wellbeing champions and help support children at break times as well as leading clubs and activities linked to mental health and wellbeing.
Impact
Through our PSHE curriculum pupils:
- develop increased confidence in expressing feelings, asking for help and making decisions. They begin to develop self-awareness and emotional literacy, which supports resilience when facing challenges or change.
- are better able to manage behaviour and responses, especially in challenging situations
- develop resilience by learning to cope with setbacks, manage their emotions, make amends and move forward positively, thereby supporting a calm and safe school environment.
Pupils leave Ickworth Park ready to face new challenges with confidence and resilience, build positive and respectful relationships and are well equipped to become active, caring and responsible members of society.
